What Is Few-Shot Learning?
Few-shot learning is a technique where an AI model learns to perform a new task by being given a small number of examples (typically 2-5) within the prompt or instruction, rather than requiring extensive training data or fine-tuning.
An AI technique where a model learns to perform tasks from just a few examples provided in the prompt.
Few-shot learning is a powerful prompt engineering technique for AI-powered automations. Instead of writing complex rules to classify data, you can provide the AI with a few examples of each category and it generalizes the pattern to new inputs.
In automation, few-shot learning enables rapid AI customization. For example, to classify support tickets by category, you provide 3-5 examples of each category in your prompt: "Example 1: 'My password isn't working' -> Account Access. Example 2: 'When will my order arrive?' -> Shipping." The AI learns the pattern and classifies new tickets accurately.
Few-shot learning works because large language models have already learned general language patterns during training. The examples you provide help the model understand your specific use case and output format, not teach it language from scratch.
For automation users, few-shot learning means you can create sophisticated AI classification, extraction, and generation steps without any machine learning expertise — just provide clear examples of what you want, and the AI handles the rest.
