What Is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of artificial intelligence that deals with the interaction between computers and human language. It enables machines to read, understand, and derive meaning from text and speech.
AI technology that enables computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.
NLP is what allows automation platforms to understand your instructions in plain English. When you type "send a Slack message to the sales team whenever a deal over $50K is created in Salesforce," NLP is the technology that interprets this instruction and translates it into an executable workflow.
In workflow automation, NLP powers several capabilities: intent classification (understanding what a customer email is about), sentiment analysis (detecting whether feedback is positive or negative), entity extraction (pulling names, dates, and amounts from text), and text generation (writing responses and summaries).
Modern NLP has been revolutionized by transformer-based models (the architecture behind GPT, Claude, and other LLMs). These models understand context, nuance, and even implied meaning far better than previous rule-based NLP systems.
For automation users, NLP means you can work with unstructured data — emails, chat messages, documents, social media posts — as easily as structured data like database records and spreadsheet rows.
